An herb that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries horny goat weed is a common ingredient in many vitamins, supplements, and other medicines. The leaves of the herb are what is used in these vitamins, supplements, and medicines. Known as “yin yang huo” in Chinese medicine, there are at least 15 known different species of horny goat weed.

What Is Horny Goat Weed

Considered to be a natural aphrodisiac, horny goat weed is a member of the Berberidaceae family and comes from a plant species known as Epimedium. Traditionally found in regions in the eastern half of the world, horny goat weed’s active ingredient is icariin. Icariin is what’s responsible for Epimedium’s health-promoting effects.

Legend has it that horny goat weed’s name was derived from farmers. These farmers noticed that when their goats and sheep ate the Epimedium herbs, they became more “stimulated” around goats and sheep of the opposite sex. Thus, the name horny goat weed was born, allegedly.

Ongoing research is being conducted by scientists, but horny goat weed has proven before it can have these beneficial effects. The largest benefit of horny goat weed occurs with libido. Horny goat weed can increase libido in both men and women. Additionally, it can help men with erectile dysfunction and women with vaginal dryness. Also, with women, horny goat weed can help relieve symptoms of PMS and menopause. Although these are the main benefits of horny goat weed, it has been used to treat the following:
