Considered one of the richest sources of isoflavones – water-soluble chemicals that act like estrogens – red clover is excellent for both men and women. Many known health benefits come from this wonderful plant and colorful flower. These benefits range from supporting bone health to improving blood flow for a healthier heart.

Natural Benefits

Let’s get into some of the most common benefits that red clover provides to people around the world.

Healthier Blood & Heart

  • It is also suitable for both genders in the reduction of cholesterol, production of urine, improved blood circulation, decrease the possibility of blood clots and arterial plaques, and limiting the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
  • It is believed that red clover can help prevent heart disease in several ways. Although the results of human studies are not definitive, some show that taking this supplement can lower the levels of “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and increase the levels of “good” high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) in the body.
  • It is described that red clover contains small amounts of chemicals known as coumarins, which can help keep blood from becoming thick and sticky. Therefore, the possibility of blood clots and arterial plaque formation can be reduced. Plaques are collections of blood cells, fats, and other substances that can build up in blood vessels, possibly reducing or blocking blood flow.
  • It can help the arteries stay healthy and flexible (a quality often called “arterial compliance”), which can also help prevent some of the plaque deposits that can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Nutrition & Cholesterol

  • It is a great source of many valuable nutrients such as calcium, chromium, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, thiamin, and vitamin C.
  • Another property of red clover is that it can promote an increase in the secretion of bile acid. Because cholesterol is a major component of bile acid, increased production of bile acids usually means that more cholesterol is used and less cholesterol circulates in the body.

Women’s Health

  • Several studies of a patented extract of isoflavones from red clover suggest that it can reduce hot flashes in menopausal women, offer breast improvement and maternal health.
  • Also, menopause increases a woman’s risk of developing osteoporosis (significant bone loss or porous bones which are susceptible to fracture). Other researches indicate that a patented extract of red clover isoflavones can decrease bone loss, even increase bone mineral density in pre and perimenopausal women. And because it contains chemicals called isoflavones, which belong to a broader class of plant chemicals known as phytoplankton (plant origin) in estrogen, red clover is often taken to relieve the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The isoflavones are similar in form to the female hormone. Therefore, they can be attached to estrogen receptors throughout the body, particularly in the bladder, blood vessels, bones, and the heart.
  • For women with normal estrogen levels, red clover isoflavones can displace some natural estrogens, prevent or relieve estrogen-related symptoms such as chest pain associated with premenstrual syndrome. This effect can reduce the possibility of developing estrogen-dependent cancer of the endometrium (the lining of the uterus).
  • The results of a review of almost 1,000 women suggest that red clover may interfere with a known enzyme to promote the progression of endometrial cancer.

Prostate Health

  • Other research indicates that red clover can block enzymes that are believed to contribute to prostate cancer in men. An enlarged prostate can cause men to experience a weak or interrupted flow of urine, dribbling after urinating or the need to urinate, even after urination.

Skin & Hair

  • Red clover includes isoflavones which have positive effects on skin and hair health. Estrogens improve skin in many ways. Among these, they increase collagen content, skin thickness, and improve skin moisture. There is evidence that diets with high levels of phytoestrogenic isoflavones are associated with a low incidence of menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis. You can find red clover in all-natural supplements such as AgelessHAIR which provide excellent results for those looking for natural anti-aging solutions.

Side Effects

Among its side effects, it is described that because it contains estrogen, it can cause abnormal fetal development, so red clover is not recommended for pregnant women.

Women with hormone-dependent conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian, or uterine cancer should not take red clover because of its possible estrogenic effects. Men with similar prostate cancer should avoid taking red clover unless a doctor recommends it.

There is very little information available about how this plant could affect a baby or a young child. Therefore, its use is not recommended during lactation or early childhood.
