What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease of the skin which causes the life cycle of the cells to be accelerated. This leads to the formation of scales and red patches (sometimes purple), and they are itchy and painful, and the affected area may flare up due to certain environmental factors. It also affects the joints, making them swell up and sore. The disease is persistent; this means it reoccurs. It can occur in an isolated area on the skin or can even cover the entire surface. Psoriasis can be caused by genetically transmitted diseases which affect the immune system and is not contagious.

There is no known cure for it, but with the right treatment, it can be managed. There have been reported cases where psoriasis goes into remission, and it is also not uncommon for it to disappear entirely. Since it is believed that psoriasis transmission has something to do with the genes, knowledge of family medical history may help in diagnosing the disease.

Known Treatments

There is no known cure for psoriasis, but there are treatment methods to help a patient live with the disease. Some common treatment methods include phototherapy, use of creams and vitamins, and other natural methods. Amongst the above-listed methods, one of the most successful treatments is the use of vitamins, and the most highly renowned vitamin for this disease is Vitamin D.

Vitamin D & Its Benefits

Studies have shown that patients who have psoriasis also suffer from vitamin D deficiency. It does not mean that a lack of Vitamin D is the cause of psoriasis, but the absence of Vitamin D affects the body’s ability to keep the skin healthy. A Vitamin D deficiency could arise from the fact that psoriasis affected areas would likely hinder sunlight from making direct contact with the skin. Since most of the Vitamin D used by the body comes from sunlight making contact with the skin, it stands to reason that an increase in Vitamin D levels would be an effective therapeutic method against psoriasis.

An increase in Vitamin D levels of the body is likely to help contain the growth of psoriasis and as seen in some cases, clear the growth.  With reduced psoriasis growth or clear skin, the body can more effectively obtain more Vitamin D from the contact between sunlight and the skin. Vitamin D also helps repair or change how the immune system works; this, in turn, helps maintain healthy skin and keeps psoriasis from returning.

Out of all the possible treatments for psoriasis, Vitamin D has the fewest side effects. There is no danger of any damage being done to the skin; instead, with a steady supply of Vitamin D, it is possible to ensure that psoriasis does not return. The success of Vitamin D in treating this disease is highlighted by the fact that many other alternative forms of treatment, like the use of creams, have added Vitamin D to their regiment. It just shows that the use of Vitamin D may be the most important method for treating psoriasis.
